Fishing With Your Furry Best Friend

First and foremost, fishing with a dog is a sport of its own.

When I got Bodi, I knew I wanted him to be able to join me on all of my adventures to include fly fishing; however, it was difficult to teach a puppy the lesson of patience that took me years to appreciate as a fly fisherwoman!

My favorite trick of them all was to stuff my pockets with small dog treats, and continually feed them to him while I casted and mended my line. I could typically get a cast and two mends in before he lost interest. Once he lost interest, we regrouped and started again all while being motivated by the treats in the pocket.

The pivotal moment of this training experience was due to a phenomenal day of fishing. He caught on, and began to notice fish rising to the grasshoppers, and began to get excited when I would hook a fish. After this trip we still had to work on patience, since unfortunately not every fishing day is this successful.

Here are a couple of our necessities for our fishing adventures!

Treats: Crunchy O’s

E-collar: Sport Dog

While everyone has their own opinion on e-collars, I am a huge fan. Growing up with bird dogs, they always had these collars on not only for recall but their own safety. Bodi knows when this collar goes on, we are headed on an adventure, and he gets excited! If they are used properly, they can be a very beneficial tool for a variety of environments.

Dog Bowls: Collapsible Dog Bowl

While he tends to drink plenty of river water, I like to have these on hand not only for regular drinking water, but to pour water on top of his coat, especially on hot days where we may be walking to other spots.
